Black Leopard, Red Wolf by Marlon James

4.0

This book was WOW. Not gonna lie, a lot of moments were very hard to read and not for the faint of hearts. There were so many moments that I almost put it down for good - most being along the line of gratuitous violence along the lines of Game of Thrones. But the more I read, the more I realized this violence had a purpose, like Chekhov’s gun, it wasn’t put in the plot for no reason. These character’s live in a violent world, behest by magical beasts and human nature at every turn. And yet.
Initially it was a very slow start. Partly why it took me so long to read is because of the graphic language, but also how intricately James builds the world. It takes a while. It’s worth it. I am in awe of how specific, vivid, original, and transporting the story becomes. If you like Game of Thrones but you’re tired of that world, I highly recommend. However, one was a lot for me so I might not invest in the other two in this trilogy.
