Sal is recently out of prison and is trying to avoid getting involved in the gang he grew up in. He rents a cot in a garage in exchange for a small amount of money and cleaning it out. It brings him in close proximity with his childhood crush who is the young widow of a fellow gang member.

There is descriptive sex. If you don’t want to read the sex it is not hard to skip.

The story is harsh, beautiful, tense and violent in parts, and full of insight about someone swamped by anxiety and low self worth. Sal’s journey is difficult but feels real.

I listened to the audiobook and the narrator is excellent.
