Oh how I've missed Ana and Din so much. Granted this is the second book in the series but Ana is just so much fun! I love her character. She's still mysterious, and thanks to this book, eve more so than last time. She's a puzzle that I love to explore as she loves to explore her cases.

This book was full of twists and turns and just when I thought I had it, I got a new piece that confused and befuddled me which I love when an author does that throughout my reading of a book and this case, Bennett has done it twice across both books. The world building I loved is still present and this time more expansive as we are taken to a new canton at the edge of the Empire's reach, for a puzzling disappearance that is actually a disguised murder mystery full of political intrigue, magic, blood, and power that falls to Ana and Din to solve before it's too late.

Not to mention the dialogue is fantastic. I love the back n forth between Din and Ana and now Din and Malo. Bennett suckers me in with the witty repartee yet again but there's also the familiarity of it, as even though if feels like time has passed, Ana and Din are very much still them and I appreciate that, it's like coming back and now thanks to this book, I'm going to miss them even more until the next book. I just know it.

Bennett writes characters that stick with one, and these have stuck with me since The Tainted Cup.
