Tragic. I loved loved Blindness. It was a horrific story, but so well-told, well-crafted, engaging and heart-breaking. Seeing is purported to be the sequel to Blindness, but about a third of the way in, it felt almost as if Saramago's publisher forced him to come up with a sequel he didn't want to write. And he does everything he can to ensure it doesn't become a trilogy. The story itself begins in an an intriguing way, but quickly settles into a very detached, impersonal description of events. Then, the narrator actually describes himself realizing this and finally begins to develop characters and describe scenes about half-way through. Just at the point of giving up on this, the story finally took a turn as it caught up with characters from Blindness, so I kept going. The last few chapters were actually great, but I hated the ending. Altogether, it seems to be a really uneven, and, I can only assume, hastily put together book that Saramago wasn't interested in writing. Not recommended.
