I loved this book. I couldn’t put it down, finished it in a week. I read the reviews, I get the criticisms - the parts with the teens read like a YA novel, and Jade’s part is pretty cringey. I don’t care, it was a good story. And teenagers are cringey. She didn’t grow up in Gilead, she had really lax hands-off parents, I think her part made sense. The notion of Aunt Lydia being Anti-Gilead from the start seems like a stretch, but then again she wasn’t a major character in the first book. A lot of people wanted more world building not just more of the same, but like, this is what the author chose to write about, boo hoo. Write your own book. For me, being so frustrated at the show and wanting a resolution and wanting a happy ending for June, this story was very satisfying. I still like Atwood’ style, and Aunt Lydia’s parts were so well written and fun to read. I would say this wouldn’t happen in real life, we would stop it before it got too far, but it’s 2025, we have Nazis running the government, and Americans voted for this to happen. And this book was written in 2019; I feel like it’d be more tongue in cheek if Atwood wrote it more recently. Overall, loved the book. I like books with clear happy endings. I hate ambiguous up-for-interpretation endings.
