Failed Future by Elise Kova
4.0

Failed Future was thankfully a step back up from Chosen Champion. It felt better balanced, it struck more emotional nerves, and it maintained that same ease of reading I liked in Chosen Champion. In the span of just a few hours, this whole book was devoured.

Quite a fun read, overall, and it held a lot of things I wasn't anticipating. For one, Taavin and Vi's relationship was definitely tempered down and experiences conflict. From how fast they seemed to be enamored in the second book, I was certain book three would be just, endless declarations and kissing, but it laid bare a lot of things and has certainly set up things that are to be overcome yet.

There isn't much to elaborate on because I was overall satisfied with the events that unfolded, but I still say that I was really happy that Aldrick's character was what I'd expected it to be at this point in his life (he's somewhere in his 40s, I believe) from knowing him throughout Air Awakens--it's really sweet how he loves and believes in his daughter.

It also turns out that I was right--this series does feature an element of time travel, though, not in the way I initially anticipated. I figure from this point on, we'll now see the other side of those moments in Air Awakens. The curiosity shop, the windmill, the final battle, etc.

Onward, to the fourth book.

Also, I do want to say that I was given a free ebook omnibus of all five books in this series for the purposes of review by the author, but my thoughts remain wholly my own. The only stipulation (and it was flexible, should circumstances pop up to prevent it) put on me and that I agreed to post my reviews by a certain time. Very standard stuff for review copies.
