The blurb to King sells itself and based on this alone, T.M. Frazier pretty much guaranteed I would be stalking this title until I could get my mitts on it. I was attracted by it's intrigue, a young girl homeless and desperate with no memory of anything about herself. And of course King, a hardened criminal with no reluctance to exact revenge on those who cross him.

Having recently been released from prison King is welcomed home with a party thrown by long term best friend and partner in crime, Preppy. Doe is cajoled into attending the party by her friend Nikki and it's here King and Doe meet. It isn't a fairy tale meeting by any means and ultimately Doe finds herself falling foul of King's "hospitality" and consequently in his debt, a debt he fully intends on collecting.
In all the time I'd been living on the streets, I've had some close calls, some serious gut check moments. I've seen things that have made my skin crawl and my heart race. I was very familiar with feeling afraid.
Fear had nothing on King.
Of course we expect them them to come together, that's a given. For me the pleasure comes in how it all unfolds. I enjoyed King's protective streak with Doe, he can't help being the gruff, crude man that he is but his need to keep her safe is paramount. There are plenty of moments the author successfully conveys the sadness that has enveloped them both at significant times in their lives; King had a childhood of being forgotten and Doe who faces a future of not being remembered.

King's past dealings come to a head with some utterly dire consequences for them both but it's developement that happens at the end, the very last sentence nonetheless which really kicked up my enthusiasm and absolutely ensures this reader will be watching out for the conclusion of the story in Tyrant.
Admittedly there were times I felt I didn't connect and almost guilty for not feeling more than I should for them. I understood King's reputation and saw him in action but for some unexplained reason I expected it to be a grittier story. I have no clue what will happen next but I'm definitely looking forward to it.
