Everything That's Underneath by Kristi DeMeester

3.0

“There so much we can’t see. Everything that’s underneath. Hiding. But it wants us to see, to pull it out from where it’s sleeping and make it beautiful again.”

Everything That's Underneath is Kristi DeMeester's debut, a collection of creepy horror stories (there are a lot in there!). Let me start by saying that the writing is absolutely gorgeous: it's dark and atmospheric and matches perfectly with the horror it describes. There are a lot of natural elements and physical feelings in this collection, a deep connection between humans and the earth. Recurring themes are dreams, family relationships, loss, love and all these are associated with organic elements and sensations: wind, leaves, blood, fog, hunger, fear.

Unfortunately I often found myself lost in the beauty of the writing describing me these unsettling and dark sensations, so lost that I was not interested in the actual story. I took breaks after each story because I was hoping to focus on what actually happens too, but sadly I was always more drawn to the haunting prose and that's too bad.

Still I think this is a good collection of short stories and I would recommend it to horror lovers looking for beautiful writing. 3 stars.
