I hate to say it but this book was a struggle to get through. The writing just fell flat to me. It somehow had the vibe of a young adult fantasy, but the context of a dark romance and that combination was very discordant. Especially with how this novel opened, it felt almost lighthearted and joking. Then it tried to take a hard left to more darker topics but stumbled. I felt as though Julie was trying too hard to keep a line of morality and it made it so neither of the main characters seemed to act in a way that made sense. I’m not saying you can’t have morality in a dark fantasy, but in this book it just didn’t work.
Overall, this book had an interesting premise but lacking execution. I wanted to like it a lot more than I did. 😬
