The Counselors
by Jessica Goodman
This book had lots of potential, mostly interesting characters, cover ups and a murder. But then the final reveal was such a let down and really felt out of left field, when it could have gone for a much more emotionally impactful final result.
Goldie was a good character. She was complex, with conflict about where she fits in, her small town or her ritzy summer camp, and doesn’t full share her true thoughts with anyone. Her relationship with Heller was a surprise to Goldie but seemed to help her define who she was as a person. The way Goldie is treated after NYE by Heller and he classmates, sets in motion a summer that is devastating, dangerous, and makes Goldie question everything she thought she knew.
Since one of the main focuses of the book was the friendship between Goldie, Ava and Imogen, very other character felt really underdeveloped especially the male characters. The story sets up like Cal, the one time best friend of Goldie, is going to play a huge role in the story but he essentially is background and ignored for pretty much the whole story. Meg has a slightly bigger role but still feels completely one dimensional.
While I didn’t love this book, Goodman is a solid YA mystery writer so I’ll definitely pick up more from her.
