A Beautiful Place to Die by Philip R. Craig
4.0

Jefferson W. Jackson, aka J.W., is a tough Boston cop forced to retire young after a bullet lodges in his back, very close to his spinal cord, it's too dangerous to attempt removal. He lives as a semi recluse on Martha's Vineyard. He hasn't done any police work for 5 years when he is sucked into a case involving a close fishing buddy's family.

Interestingly part of the story involves an adoption, that was unexpected.

I prefer Cynthia Riggs' Martha's Vineyard mystery series but overall this was a good read and I'll probably continue the series.
