There were moments of real drama in this book, but often, the writing didn't mesh with the topic. Mortensen is doing amazing work, but somehow its not portrayed that well in the book. Perhaps its the nature of the way Mortensen does his work, quietly with little fanfare. I enjoyed the process that was described in this book; the time it took, the fact that Mortensen didn't know how to do this, or who or what to do first. Hence, the bridge before the school. Reminded me constantly of how things have been so badly handled by western democracies. I especially liked the comments about the media in the Islamabad hotel. Good marks for Kathy Gannon( a Canadian).
Oh, and yes, the wife is the hero here. She puts up with this driven individual who refuses to quit. I couldn't do it. Kudos to her!
And could someone please tell our governments to stop wasting money on munitions, and just find people to take educating children as their mission. We could even pay them.
