Dead People Suck: A Guide for Survivors of the Newly Departed by Laurie Kilmartin
3.0
A quick book full of quips about dealing with a loved one dying and what to do. Odd way of dealing with the topic, but it's refreshing to read a light book about death. Wasn't laugh out loud funny or anything to me, but then again I'm not big on "conventional" humor. I'm rating this book one star less than on Grief and Grieving (finished them both today) because this one didn't make me laugh though it did amuse me some, but the latter did make me cry a little bit.
"When sex kills, humanity cums together for a cure. But with cancer, we're bringing pink ribbons and yellow wristbands to a gunfight. " - p.12
"Cancer has one dream: to spread until it kills its host and itself. No matter what kind of life form one is, this plan makes no sense. In the early 2000s, I found a cheap, illegal sublet on Manhattan's Upper West Side. I moved in quietly and gratefully. My goal was to live there until I got caught. My goal wasn't, "Let's burn this place down, with me in it. " -p.13
Dumb things people do when the oncologist says, "It's time for hospice. ": "Mistake 'can't' for 'won't'. So many people survive cancer that when the doctor says your dad's 'can't' be treated, it feels like a 'won't'. Like the oncologist is the hostess are a busy restaurant and if you just slip her an extra hundred, she'll find a seat for your dad at the survivors table. She can't. " - p.30
"Working parents get a few weeks off to begin life, working adults deserve a few weeks off to end one. Your needs will be like a new parent's, but in reverse. " - p.75
