Because I have an insta-crush on Saul Angert. Because I'm a horrible friend and a traitor to my father. Because when Angerts and O'Donnells get together, Bad Things happen."

Rating: ★★

I'm so sad that I did not like this book better.

The things that I like

The cover. Isn't it gorgeous?! It's one of those covers where I am just expecting the best things out of. It's so pretty!

I loved the parts that were written about Jack's father. The narration when it came to the parts wherein Jack was recounting memories with her father was so heartwarming and heartbreaking at the same time. Her emotions of grief about her father's death was portrayed very well as well.

The things that I DID NOT like

The family-feud theme. I gotta say. I am not a fan. There are times wherein family feuds work (i.e. the movie Klaus) and there are times that it does not (this one). I hope that there had been a better reason for the root cause of it. I think it was a little underwhelming. Then I found out that this was a retelling of Romeo and Juliet, and why am I not surprised that I did not really like this book when I didn't like the original?

The magical realism in this book. I was so confused during the first pages, maybe it was my fault because I dove into this book without any prior knowledge about it. I think I would have enjoyed this better without that factor.

Plot. There was not much room to go around in regards to the plot. We already know how this was going to end. There was nothing surprising. Nothing we haven't seen before.

The writing. The book was heavy in narrations, although enjoyable it was still kind of plain. I'm not a huge fan of the narrator either (that or I'm just over YA characters in general). I enjoyed the parts when she's telling stories about her father, but as soon as we get out of that, the narration quality plummets.

In sum: This is my 2nd Emily Henry book. I just don't think that she is the right author for me. Also, I think another reason why I didn't enjoy this book is because I lack the experience needed to be able to relate with the main character.

I recommend this for people who likes magical realism, ghosts, and fans of Romeo and Juliet.
