After suffering an injury, Laura left her job as a frontline WW1 nurse and went back to her hometown in Nova Scotia. Remaining on the front lines is her brother, Freddie, a soldier.  When his belongings are returned to her, but without confirmation of his death, she travels back to Europe, hoping to uncover what has happened.
Arden's portrayal of the tragedy experienced by frontline soldiers and medics made this story, like many others about World War One, extremely difficult to read.
