Metamorphoses
by Ovid
Its amazing that Ovid is still read so many years after it was written. Comments such as, '...if it is bitumen that blazes up... then surely when, in the long course of time, earth's stocks are exhausted, she will no longer afford a rich abundance of fuel for the flames', and, 'If there be any truth in poets' prophecies, I [Ovid] shall live to all eternity, immortalised by fame', seem prophetic.
As well as being prophetic, it's beautifully written. Each story blends into the next without jarring or even breaking the narrative. The reader is taken from the Creation to the Roman Empire without even noticing the shifting of time or place.
