There’s nothing new here. The FMC is straight out of the “why do I love this so much?” trope, and the MMC should be studied by psychologists for research purposes. The plot? Predictable. The writing? Just like every other book by this author... dragged out, overly detailed in all the worst ways. By the time I was a quarter in, I was rolling my eyes so hard I was scared they’d get stuck. Like okay, I get it, they’re twisted, can we move on now?
And then as if that wasn’t enough, near the end, they start talking like they’re bootleg Shakespeare characters. My brain nearly gave up. The final conflict?Solved by faking that the MMC is dying… really? And the FMC just forgives him?? REALLY?? Absolutely ridiculous. At that point, I was actually mad at myself for finishing this.
Oh and let’s talk about how this is supposed to be a standalone but somehow leans way too much on other books/series. They bring up past couples’ plots so often that I felt like I had homework to do before reading this. And the worst part? I have read some of this author’s other series, but not this one, so when I realized who these characters were, it just made the story feel full of holes. The pacing is also a mess, the timeline feels weird at times, and overall it was just frustrating.
