The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde

4.0

truly a masterpiece in how it depicted vanity for outward beauty, coupled with one’s inner substance! it’s definitely an important classic to at least read, as themes of selfishness, artistic value, and morality within society are deliberated upon heavily.

like most classics, the characters (except basil, the painter) we’re SO UNLIKABLE. but i enjoy that facet about picture of dorian gray because it allows criticism and discussion! lord henry is just vile, and dorian gray’s tumbling into the role of the “villain” is just horrifying, yet infinitely intriguing to watch (like a car crash, so they say).

i did dock a star off just because there was a lull in the pacing that the beautiful writing couldn’t make up for. but otherwise, it was a great classic to start fall off with!
