I loved this book! The main character is very endearing; Clarke does a very good job at making his character sympathetic even in isolation (so we don’t get much from his interaction with other people).

The idea of ritual whether for personal gain or practice is a major theme of this novel. What faith can look like in isolation vs the story of an occultist who manipulated his followers.
