“The drama at Sidley Park was not about pigeons but about sex and literature”
Stoppard’s play ‘Arcadia’ tries to fill in the gaps between Byron’s time at Sidley Park and his sudden disappearance from Europe following it. This is told through a shifting chronology between Septimus and his student Thomasina, staying at the estate alongside Byron, and the academics Bernard and Hannah who are trying to uncover the sequence of events surrounding the poet Ezra Charter’s disappearance around the same time. Stoppard writes with extremely precise stage directions, and his characters have a strange interest in Tortoises’. His set seemed interesting, described to never have a prop leave the stage as the study will build up and the romantic and modern periods blend into one while remaining distinct. I did find there were maybe a few too many characters popping in and out than necessary to tell the story, it could’ve been accomplished with solely the primary four, given Byron himself is never present.
