On the Come Up by Angie Thomas

4.0

Angie Thomas has done it again. This woman can singlehandedly be the proof about why we need #ownvoices books. This is her second coming-of-age story. Here we meet Bri who is trying to make a name a name for herself in the music industry outside of her dad's shadow (while simultaneously enjoying the neighborhood celebrity status she has by virtue of being her dad's daughter). We get to see her dreams, trials, and tribulations; meet her support system; and see the vultures that are waiting for their turn to sweep in from the periphery.
