I am giving this book a solid 3.75. I loved the setting and plot, especially the first third. For a loose retelling of The Count of Monte Cristo, I was here for the revenge story. Dani and Noor had me rooting for them the whole book! I wanted to eat the food and drink rose chai, and the author did a wonderful job helping me feel like I was there with the characters.
I kept reading instead of going to bed, because I needed to know how the book ended, while simultaneously sighing a lot.
Maz, however, never grew on me. Evil? No. An idiot? Yes. I don’t love a miscommunication trope, and the end of the book felt like the author said “there we go! All solved” while…they needed more than one conversation imo. Also they never again addressed the issue of the food they destroyed and that bothered me a lot.
Overall a mostly enjoyable book and I am so glad I read it!
