I really, really wanted to like this. I'd seen the movie a long time ago and my prevailing memory of it was thinking that it was a cool concept that had been poorly executed, and that I better read the book. Turns out the book is also a cool concept, but I found it a slog to get through, chiefly because the protagonist is just so incredibly irritating. I actually quite enjoyed the last couple of chapters that focused on the creepy necrophiliac, and I felt much more interested in his story than that of our main girlie. I think that fundamentally I don't enjoy the way that King writes women in the 1st person; there's not anything specific I can put my finger on, I just find something about it off-putting. I think my experience of the book was potentially marred by the fact that I read this as an audiobook and I found the narrator's voice fairly grating. It's decidedly mid for me.
Graphic: Death, Gore, Sexual assault, Sexual content, Sexual violence
Moderate: Sexism, Violence
There is a chapter that contains necrophilia and mutilating corpses though it's not particularly graphic.
