It took me a long time to get the book. To get what it’s getting at. Though, I’m not sure, maybe I already knew what it was getting at quite early, but then I wasn’t feeling it. Then, halfway through, I finally started feeling it.
When
Marx died
, I felt it. It started making sense, what all that suffering was for and what it wanted to say. Once I realised that, I started enjoying it a lot more. My criterium for a book of at least 4 stars is that I must actively think “wow, I’m really enjoying this” for a significant amount of times throughout the story. And though the first 250 pages were almost devoid of that, I think that second part was strong enough to make up for it. I get it now.
Very honourable mention to the creativity of this author. I can't name a single other book like this one, and I adore that. Zevin built an intricate real world and an even more intricate gaming world, and I love the intertwining of the two. Just, fantastic writing.
