This novel is absolutely terrifying, but also absolutely compelling with a very deep core about mourning.
Grady Hendrix takes what would have been a spinner rack horror novel from the 1980s (puppets, why did it have to be puppets) and gives it a much deeper meaning.
This is not to say it is without gore: death, amputation, possession, etc., and although some of it is extreme, it is never gratuitous for the situation. I also appreciate that there is no sexual abuse horror in the novel, something that has kept me from reading horror more. Also, Hendrix writes women characters extremely well, always has.
Give it a try. If it's too upsetting, put it down.
