Slathbog's Gold
by M.L. Forman
Alex finds himself chosen as adventurer. As he and his 7 companions set out to slay the dragon and find his hoard, there is much that Alex must experience and discover about himself. Not the least of which is his magical talent.
Where to start... There were a lot of places where I felt like I was reading The Hobbit with slightly simpler writing. The whole quest to slay the dragon, Elves, Dwarves, wizards, and men. The world building is different, and I enjoyed the story. I'm hopeful that to continue the series will differentiate the adventures just a little bit more.
There is a scene were Alex discovers that he has the capacity to learn magic and become a wizard. As I was reading, I kept flashing to the scene in Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone where Harry says, "I'm...a...a...wizard!" I just couldn't read it without that tone of voice.
So, all together, I enjoyed the book very much despite its similarities Tolkien. Tolkien, after all, practically invented this style of fantasy.
