Winger
by Andrew Smith
Winger is, for the most part, an enjoyable and fast-paced read. The author gives Ryan Dean West a humorous, believable adolescent voice. Some funny sexual innuendoes, just like reading my high school yearbook! In many ways, I really enjoyed this book and found it hard to put down, but the ending left me feeling quite cheated. I thought Joey's character was great, but his disappearance and ultimate demise felt labored to me. There just wasn't enough interaction between the character and his aggressors to warrant that kind of melodrama. The scene where we find out what happens to Joey is by far the most emotional in the story. And it's all of two sentences. I wanted to be sad and more affected than I was given the chance to be.
