The Troop by Nick Cutter
3.0

Proceed with EXTREME caution. This is not your average creepy read.
I do usually enjoy being horrified, but this was mostly a disgusting nightmare and not so much a scary / horror novel. Reading this I did wonder if anyone has checked in on Nick Cutter and is he okay? I think he might have some things to work through...

There’s extremely graphic body horror, intense psychological torment, starvation, manipulation, murder, horrible animal abuse and genuinely disturbing sexual undertones (especially regarding one of the boys, who might be one of the most twisted child characters I’ve ever read).
This book is not for the faint of heart. If you have a weak stomach or are sensitive to anything I mentioned, please skip this book.

Despite the gore overload, I couldn’t stop. It was gross, twisted, and yet somehow exactly the horror read I needed. I’m still thinking about some scenes (and unfortunately smelling some too) and I need therapy. In the end, I’m giving this 3.5 stars. It was exactly what it intended to be: a visceral, revolting, no holds barred horror novel. It made me sick, it shocked me, it left me haunted, and I still liked it. Do I recommend it? Only if you’ve got an iron stomach and a very high tolerance for psychological and physical horror. This book does not play nice.

Don’t eat while reading. Or maybe ever again.
