The Girl with the Lower Back Tattoo by Amy Schumer

1.0

There is a ridiculous lot I have to say about this book. I have finished the Amy Schumer triad. I watched (and loved) the movie Trainwreck, which in her book Amy Schumer describes as a love letter to her dad. I dedicatedly watched her show "Inside Amy Schumer," which is hilarious. And now I've finished with her book. Why is it that I loved the movie, loved the show, and now, after having read the book, find myself no longer a fan of Amy Schumer? I'm not entirely sure, but here are my guesses:

The rise of Amy Schumer I think culminated with her most recent stand-up special on Netflix "The Leather Special." It was god awful. Amy expected that she could get onstage and say 101 euphemisms for her vagina and because she is the IT girl in stand-up comedy at the moment, the audience must submissively collapse with laughter. I know, part of Amy Schumer's act is the crude dirty jokes, but there was one problem with this particular stand-up performance: IT WASN'T FUNNY. There was no wit, no creativity, no punchline. Soon after this bomb, and the negative reviews which inevitably followed, she has the nerve to blame these bad reviews on "alt right trolls," as if the only reason it was so poorly received was on account of the 10 minute bit about gun worship in the United States.

The fact is, it was a self-indulgent, mess of a show. I don't think I laughed once, and at the time, I was a fan. Then I read her book. What I've inferred after this journey through the entertainment powerhouse Amy Schumer is that Amy has achieved success. She is a big deal. And she knows it. In her book, she is regularly intimating that she hasn't forgotten where she came from, that she has remained humble even as she has become so successful. I got a distinct impression that Amy Schumer has absolutely NOT remained humble. She's full of herself, she's judgemental, she's opinionated about things which merit a lot of grey area. Long story short, Amy Schumer has become a grade A snob.

One more thing is, she gives feminism a bad name. I consider myself a feminist. Amy Schumer's brand of feminism won't bring anybody over to our side. Amy's feminism will alienate and anger the misogynistic jack waggons that are just waiting for someone like her to prove their point that feminists are "libtards" or whatever conservative derogatory term is popular that day. Her feminism is hostile and articulated in a way as to make anyone who disagrees's with her feel inferior and stupid. Is that going to convince the other side to "Join us" Amy? No! it's going to invigorate them to continue being bigoted and misogynistic assholes. How self-important do you have to be to instruct people authoritatively to "EVOLVE!"

She's not a voice for young girls unless we want young girls to be selfish, self-righteous hypocrites without an ounce of class. Sarah Silverman is a good example of a comic in the "biz" who young girls can look up to because Sarah Silverman has intelligence and class. This is a best seller because of the title and the recent buzz around her name. High marks for marketing!
