Bartleby the Scrivener
by Herman Melville
I'm not sure what to think of this.
What is Bartleby? Is he an ancestor of Wally from Dilbert who has uncovered the Zen of shirking? With his polite, hangdog replies of "I would prefer not to," he dodges tasks left and right, lives rent free in the office, and scores a fat exit bonus. Or, is he a sincerely troubled man who has lost his will to act? I've felt like that from time to time.
I liked it and regret waiting so long to read it. I'm going to have to think about this for a while and might re-read it in the future.
