Burning Souls
by Jess Cody
3.5 stars (one day goodreads will give us half stars)
Burning Souls was a wild ride intense, fast-paced, and full of vengeance, gore, and trauma. If you’re looking for a sweet love story… this ain’t it. Ash doesn’t just survive, she burns the world down and fight.
Jessie, Tobias, and Sean were obsessive in that all-consuming, “we’d kill for her” kind of way. Their devotion was borderline feral and totally addictive. I loved their dynamic with Ash, even if I wish we got more backstory on them, they felt more like pieces of her world than full characters at times.
That said, some parts of the book felt a bit disjointed. The pacing was so fast, it didn’t always give moments the time they deserved, and there were scenes I had to reread just to figure out the flow. I wanted to sit in the emotion and tension longer, but the story kept sprinting ahead.
Still the creepy Halloween scenes, the flashbacks, the rage-fueled justice? It worked. It was giving slasher film, it was giving pain-to-power fantasy, and it definitely kept me hooked. I’ll be back for book two!
Just make sure you check your trigger warnings. This one gets dark fast, and doesn’t let up.
*I was given this arc in exchange for an honest review*
