Control Point
by Myke Cole
Control Point is military fiction combined with modern fantasy - and it works amazingly! The reactions of the modern world, both individually and at the national/world level, to the sudden resurgence of magic are believable, and the military aspects ring true. The conflicts the main character, Oscar Britton, goes through with military/government and internally with his conscience drive the plot, and you learn about the magic along with him. The magic system is defined enough to understand what different types of sorcerers can do, but not so much that it takes the mystery out of it, which I really appreciate.
Waiting not entirely patiently for the next book...
