Felix Holt: The Radical by George Eliot, Lynda Mugglestone

3.0

A bit of a slow beginning while Eliot gets all of her players into position, but as soon as that's accomplished, things speed up considerably. This is the novel that I see as the clearest precursor to Middlemarch, particularly in how both eschew a traditional protagonist in favor of narrative strands following numerous seemingly unrelated characters, which become more obviously interwoven as the story progresses.
