rociost 's review for:
I Want to Die but I Want to Eat Tteokbokki
by Baek Se-hee
My expectations for this book were really high given reviews I'd seen, the amazing title and cover.. but now 2 starts feels too nice!
I started reading this book the very same day its translation was published and I genuinely appreciate the authors vulnerability in this book hence the two stars. That being said, I simply couldn't stand the psychiatrist. My intentions were NOT to have my therapist brain on but this persons dialogues made it impossible. It was all advice giving (and imo bad advice at that!) with little to no connections to the authors serious mentions of developmental trauma and deeper rooted issues. Also NO normalization of some of the authors very 'real' reflections on the individualization in todays society and other societal issues.. I feel this could've been done without colluding with the author's symptoms from her diagnosis and could lead to less pathologizing and shame driven 'work'.
It felt like a conversation between two friends with little momentum, not because of the slowness of healing work but because of the continued missed opportunities to hit the mark.
