The Perfect Girl by Gilly Macmillan
2.0

I wanted to like this so much. I dragged my way through it in moments I could snatch, but it took until close to halfway through before I started to actually really enjoy it. I kept getting confused about whose voice was narrating, and what they were in the story.

Eventually the whole story comes out about Zoe's mistake, and why she was convicted. At all times I was on her and Maria's side, I believe they took the right path and am shocked that it came down to believing the story of the other kids.

Sadly, this leads to the way the book ends, and how if you stick to your story and they can't prove you're lying, someone innocent is going to be hurt as a result.

After what was learned about Chris, I thought there might be some justice coming, but even if the truth had been told completely, I feel as though it would have come out. I don't understand why Zoe believed her way was the best way. It really makes me think she has been utterly broken by the system, never to be fully rehabilitated, which is really just sad.

I would like to have seen the resulting changes to Richard and Tess's relationship play out, as well as what came next for Sam. It would even have been good to have a further chapter devoted to Grace's voice, perhaps ten years later, where she could have reported on how her life continued.

I wanted to like this, but it was mostly depressing, and didn't leave me feeling at all fulfilled for having read it.
