Vespertine is a masterpiece of YA fantasy. Margaret Rogerson took such great care of the characters, and I genuinely don’t know how to describe what clicked about this book for me other than to say it was beautiful and I loved it.
Artemisia is such an interesting, complex character and her depth was astounding. Everything she went through in her past, how she dealt it in her present, and how she processed the world around here were all so captivating. I loved her relationships with the other characters, and how they grew as she spent more time with them and understood more about them.
The magic in this book is also so well done! It’s deceptive in that it feels really simple to understand as a reader while also having layers to it that add depth and intricacy. Everything about the world felt purposeful, and grounded in the history and lore that Rogerson established while also allowing for the fallacy of the humans who spun the history in the past.
I absolutely loved this book! It will definitely be getting added to my shelf; and I can’t wait to read more from Margaret Rogerson! 4.75 stars
