adventurous challenging funny inspiring mysterious reflective medium-paced

Weird that it took me so long to learn about the existence of this book. It has a very intriguing take on gender identity across characters and a lot of the ideas on what it means to be someone of a certain sex or to act or dress a certain way is explored creatively. The language is great and I especially loved the meta awareness of the 'biographer', making it funnier than I thought it would be. I'm a little thrown off by the time travel and some of the moments where everything flows into one and I'm a bit lost as a reader, but I'm assuming that's the point. Some lovely ideas on the nature of writing and poetry and love and life, some recognisable (but I'm assuming the recognition stems from this work originally, as it is older than most other books I've read).
