Nocturnes: Five Stories of Music and Nightfall
by Kazuo Ishiguro
This is the third book I've read by Ishiguro, the other two being [b:Never Let Me Go|6572790|Never Let Me Go|Kazuo Ishiguro|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1372716017l/6572790._SY75_.jpg|1499998] and [b:The Remains of the Day|28921|The Remains of the Day|Kazuo Ishiguro|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1327128714l/28921._SY75_.jpg|3333111]. I'm a fan. His control of tone is stunning. I like his work so much I have a hard time discussing it. To me, there's a magic to it that I don't want to risk destroying with too much analysis. This is an exceedingly rare attitude for me to take when it comes to a book.
Ishiguro shows a lot of range here. His normal mode has a touch of somber seriousness to it. But a few of these show he has excellent comic timing as well.
I'll say, as a musician, that few books capture with much authenticity what it's like to be a musician. On that score, too, Ishiguro is to be commended. If this is something that interests you, the best I've ever encountered on that score is [a:James Baldwin|10427|James Baldwin|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1343346341p2/10427.jpg]'s short story, "Sonny's Blues," which is collected in [b:Going to Meet the Man|38469|Going to Meet the Man|James Baldwin|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1714685326l/38469._SY75_.jpg|370826].
As far as I know, this is his only short story collection to date. It's impressive to see he's as good with stories as with novels. I look forward to working my way through the rest of his work.
