Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Wolves at the Gate
by Drew Goddard, Joss Whedon
2,5 stars. It was good and I also hated it.
Renee deserved better. Her death was just a means for the reader to feel sorry for Xander. I am currently rewatching the TV show with a friend (his first time, my rewatch) and Xander is by far my least favourite character on the show. I don't hate him as much in the comics, but I still have this bad taste in my mouth from all the incel stuff he used to spout. This whole Xander/Renee romance was cute until the way it ended. I was starting to really like Renee and root for her! Goddamn Whedon and his hard-on for killing characters just when we're starting to get to know them.
Dracula is a big bloomin' racist but he's played for laughs, like it's comic relief to have him use the words "moor" and "oriental/yellow" to refer to Black and Japanese characters. Thanks, I hate it.
Also just the fact that Xander is friends with a racist is just so on-brand for him. What a shit character.
Having Dawn fight a giant mecha in Tokyo is so... uninspired. Seriously, who wrote this? If you're doing a comic book story in Japan it doesn't always have to end in cliché, alright?
The Buffy/Satsu romance is kinda cute. Idk why everyone's so insistent on saying Buffy's not gay when she's literally having gay sex twice and also openly stating that she's attracted to a woman. Like girl, bisexuality exists, okay, and it doesn't have to be 50-50 per gender, jesus mcchrist.
Okay lemme now say something that I liked about this book. I liked that it was Japan-themed. I liked (in theory) that they brought Dracula back (I ended up disliking him for the racism but I liked the idea). I like Buffy, and the things she struggles with are interesting to read about. I really like the cover art every chapter. The rest of the art is fine, not my fav, but it does the job.
I will sell this as soon as I finish reading the rest of the volumes I already own. Just wanna read them to say that I have.
