Undying
by Meagan Spooner, Amie Kaufman
With the two massive bombs dropped at the end of Unearthed, I knew I would devour Undying the moment I got it. We start Undying with our protagonists, Mia and Jules, hidden in the walls on an Undying ship. The ship is now in Earth's orbit, but Earth believes it's empty, which it is *so* not. Within the first 40 or so pages, Mia and Jules make it back down to Earth and attempt to warn everyone of an impending alien attack. With absolutely no proof, it's no wonder that no one believes them.
I'll admit, I picked up the first book, Unearthed, because it was a treasure hunting novel in space. Literally, it was Indiana Jones on an alien planet and I loved that. Undying, on the other hand, takes place after the "treasure" is found. It's not another treasure hunting novel, but it's a satisfying conclusion to the duology. I adore Mia and Jules and how awkward they both are about their feelings. I like how the relationship part of the book doesn't overpower the more important drama (ahem, an alien invasion), but it still feels believable. I loved the new characters, especially Neal and all his charm.
There's a moment in the book where everything clicked into place for me and made sense and if I was more clever, I would have picked up on the foreshadowing, but alas, I did not. So the surprise was wonderful.
This was a marvelous conclusion to the Unearthed duology, and anyone who is a fan of quest-type of stories and science fiction will enjoy this wonderful journey!
