Horimiya, Vol. 1 by HERO, Daisuke Hagiwara
5.0

This volume deserves the five stars thanks to that final chapter. Holy shit, the shenanigans and misunderstandings present in this volume alone set up the rest of the series so well.

Something that I appreciate from this first volume is that it introduces Miyamura and Hori really well as separate characters as well as a future couple. Both have endearing and bizarre personality traits, but they don't clash; instead, they compliment each other and help to strengthen their relationship. I also appreciate how the "seeing someone outside of their facade" trope is handled. While it's clear both Miyamura and Hori don't want anyone but each other to see their other sides, it's not necessarily a dire end of the world situation like a LOT of shoujo romance makes it out to be. Instead, it's more so played for laughs and isn't meant to be central conflict in the series, thank FUCKING GOODNESS. Not that I necessarily hate the trope, but the fact that it's built up to an unrealistic degree in a lot of shoujo romance grates on my nerves after awhile.

The last thing I want to bring up is the supporting cast. As I've mentioned before in my reviews, one of the most important things in shoujo romance to me is the supporting cast, and while those introduced haven't been flushed out and the rest haven't been introduced, I like the supporting cast so far and see how their dynamic is going to work with Hori and Miyamura.

That's all I want to say for now. Really strong first volume that gets me pumped for the rest of the series!
