I wanted to read this novel after seeing the movie with Tom Cruise. I know books often are much better than the movies based on them, but this book had a depth of character that wasn't present in the movie and the ending was much better. I'm not sure why they decided to make the changes they did for the movie other than thinking Tom Cruise would bring in more of an audience and making the main character white would be more "accessible" to western audiences.
