Seveneves by Neal Stephenson
2.0

I don't know how to rate this. It sure wasn't "good" but I did for sure read all 865 pages of it, and was sometimes engrossed.

Here are some things I think about this book:

- Old white dudes with goatees probably shouldn't write books with "race science" as a major plot point; probably they shouldn't touch it at all.
- This thought experiment went too far.
- It's kind-of a cool achievement that this book is pretty explicitly a trilogy of full-on books that are packed into a one-book package.
- It's 865 pages.
- It largely feels like the actual book that he was excited to write was the last one in the trilogy. WAY too much of the page count feels like a dutiful trudge trying to get there.
- Neal Stephenson is way far up his own ass on this one. He did so much research for this book, and he wants to tell you all about it in great detail. In the middle of this book.
- I thought that kind of writing ^ was really cool when I was 14.
- Anathem was a good-ass book. I was so excited that Neal Stephenson's writing was growing! But I think he was maybe just saving up all his weird bad writing for this book.
- The race science thing is really uncomfortable.
- AND STILL a lot of this was kinda compelling? I kept complaining about it, but also kept reading it? There was one night towards the end of the book where things got pretty exciting and I stayed up too late reading. I can see why Neal Stephenson was my favorite author from ages 12-15! But if he wasn't, don't bother with this one.
