North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell

“Wearily she went to bed, wearily she arose in four or five hours' time. But with the morning came hope, and a brighter view of things.”

I reread this as a buddy read with a good friend and it was lovely to discuss. It's been several years since I first read it and while I still don't know that I can call it a favorite, I appreciated it more this time around. Gaskell's writing is a little difficult for me to connect with, but I do like her characters and the commentary she was giving of society and the times.

This is a novel of misunderstandings and miscommunication, which are sadly all too common. But it was nice to see the characters realize their own faults and find the virtues in others.
