nadybl 's review for:
The Independence of Miss Mary Bennet
by Colleen McCullough
What a ridiculous book. And, ridiculous book can be funny, but... this one was a bit too much for me.
First, it's not really a sequel to P&P. The tone, style and especially the characters are way too different.
And no, it's not more realistic.
P&P is not the story of a man changed by a woman's love. When we first see Darcy, he seems very disagreeable, but it's because we see him through the eyes of Lizzie's prejudice. Jane Austen cleverly sprinkle clues throughout the books showing that Lizzie might not be Darcy's best judge of character. The love of his friends, the way he treats his sister, the respect of his employees...And he easily sees through Caroline, so to think he would believe what she says about her son, to the point of rejecting him totally.
And Lizzie recognized her mistakes by the end. They both become better persons. So I could understand a lukewarm love after 15 years, but not the behaviour we see in that book.
And really? More realistic that their love comes back all of a sudden after 15 years, and that Darcy changes again?
However, I liked Mary, Charlie and Angus so much that I really enjoyed reading the book... for a while. I just decided that theses people had nothing to do with P&P and enjoyed the story. But I got fed up after a while. Almost gave up. I mean... the kidnapping, a sect, caves, then Lydia's murder...
And the ending? Darcy totally fine with his brother killing Lydia, gain's back the love of his wife without any problem, remorse or concerns... Nah, just too much for me.
