The Unbearable Lightness of Being by Milan Kundera
5.0
I recently reread this book on an flight to Austin, because I realized that I don't remember much about it from when I read it in 2007.
It's about four people (and a dog) in Czechoslovakia in the 1970’s who are romantically entangled (well not the dog really)and there are a lot of really lovely lines in it. I can't sum up the plot much more than that.
What stuck out the most on the reread was that the novel is also kind of an essay. The author is present and acknowledges that this is a piece of fiction he is writing, but there are times when the narrative breaks down and we see that the world and characters he created serve a purpose of discussing his ideas, specifically on kitsch, which I found interesting.
