Shadow of the Fox
by Julie Kagawa
An action-packed YA fantasy based upon Japanese mythology? ✅
A smart half kitsune, half human heroine transporting a piece of the powerful Scroll of a Thousand Prayers and defending it from sinister enemies that seek to obtain it? ✅
A mysterious and handsome demonslayer of the Shadow Clan who razes all who stand in his path, but secretly fights between his feelings for our heroine and controlling the monstrous entity roiling inside of him? ✅
A ragtag coalition of allies—a disgraced and unruly former samurai, an honorable noble, and shrine maidens—that somehow get roped along for the ride? ✅
A terrifyingly evil blood mage, hidden deep within the emperor's favors and palace, who seeks all pieces of the Scroll for forces of evil? ✅
Either way, I started reading Julie Kagawa's Shadow of the Fox and couldn't stop until I got through all 454 pages. Kagawa has a talent for writing some of the most vivid and blood-curling scenes (YA novel though, I remind you) and monsters that had me gripping the edges of this book. While I did feel irritated at times at our heroine and her seemingly naive approach to kindness and trust, I am excited to read on in the series and see if the purity of her heart can extend its reach into the deepest and darkest parts of the demonslayer's soul and liberate him once and for all.
