transientmeow 's review for:
From Duke Till Dawn
by Eva Leigh
The start to another great HR series by Leigh! I really like how she's adapted her writing style to this new sub-genre and pen name (check out her books as Zoe Archer for more excellent heroines and exciting plots). Yes, there is the ever-present young, unwed, and attractive titular Duke, but there is realism in his character as he meets with his stewards and men of business, and speaks often of his time in the House of Lords and hours of meetings with other members. He might not actually DO any of those things on the page, but I believe that he puts in the time and actually takes care of his responsibilities.
Cassandra is a perfectly unsuitable match for such a sober man, but of course that's why they work so well together. She opens his eyes to the realities that face the poor in London, and especially the limited choices that poor women have in this time. She knows that she's wronged people and broken the law countless times, but she can't be too sorry about it because that's one of the only options for survival she has. I also appreciate that she isn't a fresh-faced debutante (I think she's in her late 20s or early 30s?) and that the hero is also a bit older - 38, if I remember correctly?
My only quibble is that, at times, there is a bit too much flowery monologuing going on in the characters thoughts, but that's a minor issue that is easily overlooked. On to the next in the series!
