Real Life
by Brandon Taylor
reflective
sad
medium-paced
I didn’t really know what to expect from this book. Brandon Taylor’s writing was so mesmerizing - his descriptions really pulled me in. The book follows Wallace, a gay Black researcher at a university as he interacts with his white friend group. In terms of plot, the book only spans one weekend, but it feels like such a long time. This book really hit on the silence and complacency of non-Black people at problematic comments and actions. It also had this whole subplot of kind of a messed up romance Wallace was engaging in. At the end, there is still a lot of uncertainty in Wallace’s life, but also I think a lot of realizations.
