Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard
3.0

An attempt at writing a heavy book with a heavy theme, executed as a lightweight YA book with no depth whatsoever. Mare Barrow lacks personality and likeability. The only thing she ever talks (or thinks) about is the “revolution”. Which would be alright if the revolution was well fleshed out. It wasn’t. It was practically impossible to have happened so easily. Mare sure wears a good plot armor. And though it was kind of explained why it all went so smooth, it doesn’t sell it.

The romance between Cal and Mare isn’t there, yet it’s pushed as one even though these characters have zero chemistry and barely interact during the story. I don’t understand where it came from. There was absolutely zero build up to a romantic connection and it infuriates me.

I gave this three stars in the end because something about it did make me finish it. Was it Mares power? Maven? Or the twist in the end? I don’t know.
